– The Project: Aims –
Through this project we aim to:
- raise awareness of the extent and number of people who made the journey, and the likely large number of descendants of those who made the journey. It is estimated that there are many descendants who are unaware of their forebears involvement in this era of Australian history
- develop knowledge of the subject and to highlight the significance of this aspect of Australian history in the development of rural centres in Victoria and South Australia
- emphasise the involvement of Cornish miners in this chapter of Australian history
- commemorate those who made the journey and to assist family historians and descendants to access information about the journey/s
- involve local community history organisations and information centres in the towns along the routes and to establish a network of information posts on this subject
- enable visitors and tourists to follow the route/s in part or in whole, in their own time and to gain an understanding of what it involved
- further raise interest in the subject and increase the feasibility of mounting a full scale re-enactment of the journey in the future
There is increasing interest amongst family historians in stories that complement family tree research, and it is hoped that information of this type will provide them with the resources to 'follow in the steps' of their forebears.
